The study, prepared by Jonathan Roberts Consulting, highlights a lack of fast, reliable public transport east of Woolwich as a major barrier to mobility, employment and investment for a population of up to 1.8 million people.
The Kenex proposed tram network, running through a tunnel beneath the Thames, connecting with existing rail and bus networks, is forecast to generate between £3 billion and £9 billion in economic benefits depending on the scale of the scheme.
The report concludes that road-based solutions alone will not adequately address local transport needs in the lower thames region and suggests a cross-river public transport network could support housing growth, reduce congestion, improve access to jobs and create a more integrated regional economy over the coming decades.
